Building Safer Communities – Current and Future Trends

This free seminar will focus on current and future trends impacting efforts to build safe communities and brings together an exciting array of experienced speakers.

Organised and hosted by the Sydney Institute of Criminology and the Australian Safe Communities Foundation, this seminar will draw together practitioners, policymakers and academics interested in creating safe communities.

Speakers will include:

Dr Stan Salagaras – Stan is Chair of the Australian Safe Communities Foundation (ASCF). He has had over 20 years’ experience in planning and delivering care, education, community, recreational and economic services, programs and facilities to support the creation of high-quality, safe and sustainable master-planned communities. He now works as a consultant researching and auditing communities, consulting with stakeholder and community organisations, and preparing comprehensive community development strategies incorporating community infrastructure and community engagement plans.

Associate Professor Carolyn Day – A/Prof Day is a public health researcher in drug and alcohol, with a focus on illicit drug use. A/Prof Day coordinates Addiction Medicine education for the Sydney Medical School and is an Academic Leader in research Education for Sydney Central Clinical School. A/Prof Day has been a Director of the NSW Alcohol and Drug Foundation (ADF NSW) since 2009 and is an Honorary Research Associate with the Sydney Uniting Medically Supervised Injecting Centre, and a member of the Sydney Local Health District Harm Minimisation Program Steering Committee.

Dr Christopher Hunt – Dr Hunt is a clinical psychologist who is the senior supervisor at the Gambling Treatment and Research Clinic at the University of Sydney. Dr Hunt has been working at the clinic for 12 years, and has firsthand knowledge of the harms that gambling can cause to the community. Dr Hunt has experience with a range of different psychological therapies for problem gambling, as well as a detailed knowledge of the research work that has been conducted on the topic.

John Maynard – John Maynard is a community safety and crime prevention specialist who has been working in the field for over twenty years. John has qualifications in Psychology and Public Health and has worked predominantly in Local Government and the private sector including most recently at the municipality of City of Sydney. John now works as a consultant and his primary area of interest is crime and its relationship to human behaviour and architecture. John is currently putting the finishing touches to his first book Designing Safe Cities a practical guide to planning, designing, managing and maintaining safe cities.
