Federal Environmental Law reform: past lessons, priority reforms, future challenges

The Australian Centre for Climate and Environmental Law at Sydney Law School invites you to its ‘Environmental Law Year in Review Conference’ on Tuesday, 14 February 2023.

In 2022, the new Federal Government declared ‘the environment is back’ and took office with an ambitious reform agenda for federal environmental frameworks and climate action. In the face of alarming declines in the state of the Australian environment, government reform priorities have focused on climate change, the environment and biodiversity. Starting with the Climate Act 2022, critical reforms currently underway include improving the integrity of Australian Carbon Credit Units, responding to the 2020 Samuel Review of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Act 1999 through the Government’s Nature Positive Plan and co-developing a standalone federal cultural heritage law.

This event will bring together academics, practitioners, members of the NGO sector, government officials and students to hear about the implications of these ‘once in a generation’ developments in climate and environmental law. Keynote speakers and panellists will discuss the key shortcomings in existing federal legislation, the content of reforms and key challenges for Australian governments in implementing these programs successfully.

Topics will include:

  • Reforms to the EPBC Act
  • Emissions reduction legislation and the energy transition
  • First Nations cultural heritage
  • COP 15, the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosure and national offsets.
Registration:
  • Full day in-person attendance: $80 (inc. GST)
  • University of Sydney students (full day attendance): Free (Students will need to provide proof of student status at registration. Any registrations that do not provide valid proof, will be cancelled)
